Scale a floor plan

Scaling your floor plan accurately in CostMiner ensures that all the quantities and measurements in your estimate are correct. Follow this step-by-step guide to scale a floor plan using a known measurement.

Scale using a known measurement

  1. After you have imported a floor plan, the software will prompt you to scale the page. If you need to access the scaling feature after this initial prompt, simply click the Scale button, typically found on the toolbar.

  2. Identify a known measurement on the floor plan that you can use to set the scale. Ideally, select the longest measurement available to improve the scaling accuracy.
  3. Click the first endpoint of a known measurement on your floor plan.
  4. Click the second end point of the same measurement line.
  5. Input the known measurement value into the prompt box, being careful to use the specific unit (e.g., meters, feet) that you wish to have reflected throughout your estimate.
  6. Press Apply to set the scale.

Examples

For 10.5 metres, enter 10.5

For 2 feet 5 1/4 inches, enter 2′ 5 1/4″. The result will be converted to 2.44

When scaling in CostMiner, always use a known measurement from the floor plan for best accuracy. Relying on the scale provided by the PDF can lead to errors due to potential discrepancies in the document’s quality. Verify and use actual measurements to ensure precision in your estimates.

Scale a floorplan non-uniformly

To accurately scale a floor plan in CostMiner when the horizontal and vertical scales are different (non-uniform scaling), follow these steps:

  1. Click the Scale button to initiate scaling.
  2. In the scaling interface, uncheck the box for Scale Uniformly. This will allow you to set horizontal and vertical scales independently.

    disable scale uniformly.
  3. Click on the first endpoint of a known vertical measurement on the floor plan.
  4. Click on the second endpoint of that vertical measurement line.
  5. Enter the exact vertical measurement into the prompt box.
  6. Now, click on the first endpoint of a known horizontal measurement.
  7. Click on the second endpoint of that horizontal measurement line.
  8. Enter the exact horizontal measurement into the prompt box.
  9. Once both the vertical and horizontal measurements are entered, click Apply to set the non-uniform scale.

Scale using the page scale on a floor plan

Scaling your floor plan based on the page scale can be a quick method if the drawing has been generated accurately. Here’s how to use this feature within CostMiner:

  1. Begin by clicking the Scale button to start the scaling process.
  2. Locate the scale notation on the floor plan. This is often found in the legend or the plan details and may look something like “1:100” or “1/4 inch = 1 foot.
  3. Enter the scale into CostMiner. You can do this by selecting a preset scale from the dropdown menu or by typing the scale directly into the provided field if it’s not already listed.
  4. The page size should be automatically detected by CostMiner. If you alter the detected page size setting, be aware that this can affect the accuracy of the scale.
  5. Choose the output units (e.g., meters, feet) that your measurements will be displayed in throughout the estimate.
  6. Always double-check the scaled measurements by comparing them to a known size or dimension on the floor plan to confirm the scale has been set correctly.

Relying on the printed scale assumes that the floor plan has been printed accurately. Any discrepancies in the original printing or subsequent copies can lead to scaling errors.

If you change the detected page size after setting the scale, you must recheck and possibly readjust the scale to maintain accuracy.

It’s crucial to verify the scale with a known measurement after scaling, to ensure that all elements of the plan have been scaled correctly.

Edit or change page scale

Adjusting the scale of a floor plan that has already been set in CostMiner can be done easily. Here’s how to edit or change the scale:

  1. To revise the scale of a previously scaled page, click on the Scale button. This will display the current scaling method, whether it’s a manual entry of dimensions or a page scale that has been entered.

Edit the scale of a page
  2. Upon accessing the scale settings, you’ll see how the page was originally scaled, including the specific dimensions used for manual scaling or the page scale value.
  3. To change the scale, you can follow the same procedures outlined in the previous sections; ‘Scale using a know measurement‘,’Scale a floorplan non-uniformly‘ or ‘Scale using the page scale on a floor plan‘.

When you adjust the scale, it will alter all measurements and quantities previously calculated based on the old scale, which could significantly impact your project estimates.

After changing the scale, it’s essential to check the accuracy of the new scale against known dimensions to ensure the integrity of your measurements and estimates.
